Phantasm is a true classic that introduces one of horror's most evil icons, The Tall Man.
This movie centers around a teenage boy named Mike. His parents had recently been killed and because of his loneliness and fear he begins to follow his older brother, Jody, everywhere he goes. While watching Jody attend a funeral at a local mortuary he sees that the local mortician, The Tall Man. When the funeral has ended Mike sees that The Tall Man is stronger than any normal person should be. Mike also hears strange noises and sees strange small shadowy figures on the mortuary grounds. Mike enlists the help of Jody and his friend Reggie to find out what's going on at the mortuary and attempt to find out what the The Tall Man's truly up to.
Angus Scrimm is incredible as The Tall Man. Just looking at him is enough to give someone the shivers and his voice resonates oncoming doom to whoever is in his way. The mortuary has small troll like beings that do The Tall Man's dirty work, flying spheres and strange rooms that lead to a place that's truly the last place you'd want to ever end up.
I put The Tall Man right up there with Michael Meyers, Jason Vorhees and Freddie Krueger on the "A" list of horror bad guys. We also get our first taste of Reggie Bannister in this movie who plays Jody's friend Reggie. He's gone on to either star or appear in countless horror films and is a staple in the horror community.
I was asked to give letter grades to the movies I review and Phantasm is an absolute "A". This is a pretty decent movie for a youngster to see when their old enough for their first real horror flick. A minor amount of nudity/sex, not to much blood and gore and it delivers big time on a very creepy atmosphere and score.
The bottom line is that it's a truly scary movie when watched for the first time and shouldn't be missed.
